Encore Designs Sewing Skill Levels

Encore Designs patterns include the following guidelines for skill level:

Novice – Little or no sewing experience.

Beginner – Some experience making unfitted garments: straight and moderately curved seams; simple darts, tucks/pleats, gathers; patch pockets, simple vest lining; simple hem and finishing; basic (length) pattern adjustment; minimum number of pattern pieces.

Intermediate – Moderate garment experience; all Beginner skills plus interfacings; centered, lapped and invisible zippers; simple buttonholes; simple cuffs/collars, linings; length and width pattern alteration and fitting; some challenging fabrics.

Advanced – All Beginner and Intermediate skills plus underlining/interlining; jacket/coat linings; multiple-piece cuffs/collars/sleeves, plackets, welt pockets, bound buttonholes; advanced pattern alternation and fitting; many pattern pieces; challenging fabrics, some couture and tailoring techniques.

Expert – Skilled in all construction techniques, all type of fabric, all styles of garments; expert alteration and fitting skills.
